Graduate Program

Designed to attract the best and brightest, our graduate program is a challenging and rewarding way to begin your career with us.

The program

To help you find your passion in the law, we offer a structured program with rotations in many of our practice groups. Over 12 months, graduates in our Canberra office will complete two rotations, while graduates in our Melbourne and Sydney offices complete a total of three. You'll work with reasonable autonomy on high quality, complex matters and have contact with clients. When you’re not working from the office, you’ll be attending external meetings and court appearances.

Your development

As a graduate, you'll be assigned a senior lawyer during each rotation who will act as a mentor and assist with your workflow. A junior lawyer will also be assigned as your buddy to give you guidance and support. A dedicated member from our People & Culture team will also be there to guide you through the process. In addition to completing Practical Legal Training through the College of Law, we'll provide you with specialised training for all our practice areas, as well as time management and communication skills to help you excel in an office environment.

Clerkship Program

We look for talented and ambitious students to join our clerkship programs in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. This program is the main starting point for students seeking graduate positions.

The program

Our clerkship program is a great way to explore a career at Maddocks and experience working in a corporate law firm. We’re not looking for a specific stereotype. We’re looking for students with strengths and qualities that are compatible with our core values. To help us achieve this we use a blind application process when reviewing candidates. Once you get to Maddocks, we’ll provide you with an understanding of the firm and the kind of work we do, as well as what it would be like to be a graduate. We'll offer you hands-on, practical work. You will work closely not only with lawyers but with senior associates and partners, and you’ll have exposure to complex matters and client contact.

Application criteria

We welcome students who are in the penultimate year of a combined degree, undergraduate law or the JD Program. The clerkship program runs between 4 - 8 weeks in our Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney offices. Talented clerks will be considered for the graduate program.
