Your career begins on Day One at Maddocks

The first step to Day One is a Clerkship

We look for talented and ambitious students to join our clerkship programs in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. This program is the main starting point for students seeking graduate positions.

The program

From Day One you will receive a comprehensive experience of what it's truly like to work at Maddocks. You will have challenging, meaningful work, gain exposure to clients, be given a good level of responsibility, work in a supportive and collaborative team and have regular access to our partners.

The training you receive throughout your clerkship will ensure you a thoroughly prepared and ready to get involved in and contribute to client work straight away. The program begins with a comprehensive orientation which includes training and development activities and the chance to meet the people you will be working with.

During the program you will have an opportunity to rotate through 2 practice groups of your preference, with support in each rotation from a Buddy and Coordinator. You will receive regular feedback from the Partners and others you work with, plus a feedback review at the end of each rotation. Of course it's important to have some fun too and you will have plenty of opportunities to experience life at Maddocks through a range of social and sporting activities.

Application criteria

We welcome students who are in the penultimate year of a combined degree, undergraduate law or the JD Program. The clerkship program runs between 4 - 8 weeks in our Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney offices. Talented clerks will be considered for the graduate program.

Graduate Program

You will have access to top quality work for high calibre clients. This will allow you to develop your technical legal skills and business acumen on a diverse range of complex and interesting projects.

Working both autonomously and collaboratively, you will be supervised, mentored and supported by recognised experts in their respective legal fields at every stage of your career progression. In addition, the firm offers a significant range of outstanding training and development programs tailored to a wide variety of needs and interests.

Canberra

Our Canberra office continues to grow strongly. Our Canberra team has built our reputation for working on important matters for the Commonwealth Government such as the $1 billion whole-of-government IT procurement for the Digital Transformation Agency.

Melbourne

Our Collins Square office is designed to allow our people to work flexibly with their teams and clients. It includes breakout areas for collaboration, standing desks, an outdoor deck and an internal café, Barcode. The profits from Barcode are donated to charities.

Sydney

Our Sydney office is located in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. As well as working closely with government and private sector clients our Sydney team also works with community organisations such as Homeless Person's Legal Service to deliver pro bono legal services.
