What is your role at Maddocks?
I joined Maddocks in 2014 as a Senior Associate in the Employment, Safety and People team, where I work on a range of employment and industrial relations matters for both private and public sector employers.
What’s an interesting matter you’ve recently worked on?
I recently acted for an employer who was seeking to manage an employee who had a serious ice addition. This was a highly complex matter that required balancing the employee’s health with the safety of others in the workplace, and meeting with a toxicologist to gain a better understanding of addiction in the workplace.
What’s a typical day for you at Maddocks?
It usually starts with a coffee at our internal café, Barcode, followed by a mix of client and internal meetings, conferences with barristers, more coffee, working with a standing desk and (usually late in the day) dealing with novel legal questions I’ve never considered before.
How has Maddocks supported your development?
Maddocks has encouraged me to develop even further as a mentor and leader for our junior lawyers. The firm also has clearly defined paths for career progression. This means employees (including graduates and junior lawyers) don’t get lost in the shuffle at Maddocks.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by the challenge and importance of the work I do – employment law is a dynamic, complex area, that is relevant to everyone. Also, an employment lawyer has gone on to be Prime Minister.
What do you love about working at Maddocks?
The people – which includes our clients. Working for dedicated partners and motivated junior lawyers for a common goal makes the (sometimes) long hours and (always) hard work rewarding and easy. As my dad says, teamwork makes the dream work.
